Freezing to death

Freezing to death

You’d think it would go without saying that we shouldn’t leave humans to freeze to death on a street corner in a society as rich as ours.

My column this week shouldn’t have to be written. Solving chronic homelessness is a difficult challenge but making sure no human is left on the street when it’s dangerously cold is simple and straightforward. We have underused heated buildings. We have vehicles that can be used to move people out of the cold. Especially people who have nowhere else to go.

If the problem is that it’s nobody’s job to make sure people without a home aren’t left in the cold to suffer and die, then make it somebody’s job.
