Have you had about enough of Donald Trump for this week? Golly jeez Louise. I mean, even I am running out of swear words. That’s how bad this is.
You know what this reminds me of? Escaping a toxic relationship. It feels like no matter how bad it is, it can always get worse and frequently does. Also it’s crushingly expensive, there are no breaks, and it appears endless.
But on the plus side it’s very much worth it.
In my column this week I write about what we’ll need to get to the other side of this shit show in the best possible shape. Brains, creativity and empathy. With a dash of quiet competence.
Fortunately we have plenty of each. And maybe we needed this crisis to activate our Canuckian Superpowers but whatever, we’re here and they’re needed now.
But Brigitte, what about Mark Carney?
I meant to write another piece earlier this week about the changing political landscape and got caught up in too many deadlines and excuses excuses so here it is.
It would be a mistake to call me a Carney early adopter. I was very skeptical indeed – honestly I was looking at him at another Ignatieff except one who could explain quantitative easing.
Not that I especially want to know.
I started softening on him when he did that interview with Jon Stewart. Granted, it wasn’t a tough interview. But he managed to talk policy (on a late-night show) without tripping over himself, which is a good sign for someone who’s going into retail politics. He also didn’t take himself too seriously.
So, point Carney.
Evidently a lot of Canadians like his background and attitude and financial knowledge. I mean, like him or not, the guy screams quiet competence and that happens to be in demand at the moment — see above.
Teamwork is also in demand but so far, it doesn’t appear that opposition parties are ready to play that. Or, indeed, the Liberals. I guess the situation will have to get much worse before these guys get better. Sigh.
Polls are showing the Conservatives dropping like stones and for some reason it’s prompting Pierre Poilievre to keep doing more of the same which leads to more dropping and part of me is wondering how long it might take for the party to show him the door?
Likely longer than they have before the election is called.
So, now we can play how long ’till we go to the polls and my guess is May 5. Unless it’s April 28. I don’t see them having it Easter Monday because for one thing the Liberals are still too catholic for that.
What’s your guess?
